In a small Catalonian village, the peach farmers of the Solé family spend every summer together picking fruit from their orchard. But when plans arise to install solar panels and cut down trees, the members of this tight-knit group suddenly face eviction – and the loss of far more than their home.
After the international success of her first film Summer 1993, Alcarràs confirms Carla Simón as one of the most talented new young directors from Catalonia and has deservedly won this year's Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
The Garden Cinema view: Simón’s camera spends as much time monitoring the soil or the wind shaking the leaves as it does on the Sole family. In Alcarràs, the earth is like a family member: temperamental, beautiful, grounded, and threatened by industrial greed and development. In a farewell ode to traditional agricultural customs, Simón does not want to force her point, but instead allows time to pass leisurely - like a summer day in the Mediterranean.
