The Blue Caftan 12A

Maryam Touzani, France, Morocco, Belgium, Denmark, 2022, 123m.

Following its FIPRESCI prize–winning premiere at Cannes- writer and director Maryam Touzani asserts her expertise in capturing the intimacy and tenderness in human relationships.

Halim and Mina run a traditional caftan store in one of Morocco's oldest medinas. In order to keep up with the commands of the demanding customers, they hire Youssef. Slowly Mina realizes how much her husband is moved by the presence of the young man. Morocco's official entry for Best International Film at the 95th Academy Awards.

The Garden Cinema View:

The Blue Caftan defies expectations in more than one way. Where one expects a classic ‘out of the closet’ narrative, the film is subversive; revealing something more tangled and closer to real life. Here, the initial story of the wife's sexual repression and sacrifice becomes one of empowerment and unconventional love. Watching The Blue Caftan is also a deeply sensual experience due to its textured cinematography, which highlights the physicality of fabrics and skins. A cinematic gem.
