Asteroid City takes place in a fictional American desert town circa 1955 in which the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.
The Garden Cinema View:
With pastel colours, deadpan humour, and an all-star cast playing it with typical emotional detachment, Asteroid City feels like Anderson has made a pastiche of Wes Anderson. Although touching on interesting issues like government control, grief, and the relationship between art and reality, the film is ultimately too self-involved to be adding something new to his body of work. Fans of the director will likely appreciate the Andersonian details, and the general audience will be curious about the undeniably gifted director latest concoction. Here, at The Garden Cinema, we are eager to satisfy both parties by offering this Summery feast for the eyes to our audience. To be enjoyed with a sense of humour and a Spritz!
Our screening on Monday 24 July features descriptive subtitles for the hard of hearing.
