England, 1988 – Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government are about to pass a law stigmatising gays and lesbians, forcing Jean, a PE teacher, to live a double life. As pressure mounts from all sides, the arrival of a new girl at school catalyses a crisis that will challenge Jean to her core.
The Garden Cinema View: Writer-Director Georgia Oakley’s vividly realised debut feature is set at this turning point in British history. An amazingly accurate evocation of late-’80s northern Britain, and a future queer classic. One of Blue Jean's greatest strengths is Rosy McEwen's terrific performance, which conveys Jean's anxiety and self-loathing due to the homophobic paranoia of the Thatcherite era with nuance and empathy.
