Capernaum 15

Part of Mukhrijat: Arab Women Filmmakers
Nadine Labaki, Lebanon, 2018, 130m.

*The screening on 5 May will be followed by a live podcast recording with Little White Lies’ Leila Latif in partnership with Mydylarama to discuss the film and the season more generally.

Capernaum synopsis:

In a courtroom, a young boy named Zain (Zain Al Rafeea) stands before a judge. He asks to sue his own parents for giving him life. The circumstances that have brought him to this point take us on a journey through his poverty-stricken upbringing in Beirut where he lives with his family. Capernaum is a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit – a battle cry for the forgotten, the unwanted and the lost that offers hope in the most unexpected of places.

Why we include it in our season:

Labaki found fame with the beauty-salon based drama Caramel. Caperneum, her latest feature, is a moving and beautifully compassionate depiction of poverty in today’s Lebanon, which saw its child protagonists praised for their performances. The film won the Jury Prize at Cannes and was nominated for an Academy Award.

*Winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival 2018 and Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year in 2019*

Cast:
Zain Al Rafeea, Yordanos Shiferaw, Boluwatife Bankole, Kawthar Al Haddad, Fadi Kamel Youssef
