Chile 50: The People’s Train of Culture + Q&A 18

Carolina Espinoza Cartes, Chile, 2015, 60m.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the coup in Chile that overthrew the socialist government of Salvador Allende, Alborada Films and The Garden Cinema present an evening of documentary and debate.

*This screening will be followed by a discussion with Carole Concha Bell, co-founder of the Chile Solidarity Network.

Introduced by the government of Salvador Allende (1970 to 1973) the initiative’s aim was to bring culture closer to those who had no access to it.

The ‘People’s Train of Culture’ (also known as El Tren Popular de La Cultura), campaign wanted to create a National Institute of Arts and Culture and establish art colleges throughout Chile. The film examines the links with aspects of the educational and cultural initiatives of Spain’s Second Republic, such as the Pedagogic Missions, the Theatre of the People and the Theatre of La Barraca.

This event is supported by Alborada, Alborada Films and Chile 50 Years UK.
