Kensuke’s Kingdom PG

Neil Boyle, Kirk Hendry , UK, Luxemburg, France, 2023, 85m.

Based on the much-loved, best-selling children’s novel by Michael Morpurgo, and adapted for screen by Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Kensuke's Kingdom tells the epic adventure of Michael, a young boy, shipwrecked on a remote island, who must adapt to life alone. Over time, he feels another presence, learning that this world is home to both unimaginable danger and beauty, in this gripping animated adaptation of a beloved novel. Kensuke's Kingdom features the voices of Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy, Oscar-nominated Sally Hawkins, Ken Watanabe, Raffey Cassidy, and Aaron MacGregor.

The Garden Cinema View:

Kensuke's Kingdom is a heartwarming animation that addresses the need to overcome our differences to protect nature. Adapted from Michael Morpurgo's novel, it tells the story of a shipwrecked boy who finds himself on a seemingly deserted island and forms a meaningful relationship with Kensuke, a widowed Japanese soldier who lost his family in Nagasaki.

The film's narrative strength largely lies in the non-verbal communication between Kensuke and the boy, which drives much of the story. Visually, the elegant blending of 2D animation and CGI landscapes utilises the best of both styles, combining the expressive qualities and characterisation of hand-drawn animation with the endless capabilities of digital technology. One particular highlight is the aesthetically powerful and sudden switch to an ink wash art style when Kensuke's memories are depicted.

As the boy grows from an unruly child to a mature, passionate protector of nature, we are deeply moved by the emotional decisions he has to make. In spite of (or because of) its simplicity, the film ultimately has a strong emotional impact on adults and kids alike, and is a delight to watch on the big screen.
