MONDO NIGHTS X SCI-FI-LONDON PRESENTS: M.A.D. 18

Screened in partnership with SCI-FI-LONDON Film Festival
Peter Watkins, Bruce Conner, UK, USA, Various, 129m.

M.A.D  “Mutually Assured Destruction 2023” - a TERRIFYING and beautiful DOUBLE BILL of NUCLEAR FACTS and NUCLEAR FICTIONS.

MONDO NIGHTS, the WEIRDEST IN WORLD CINEMA, are SCREENING a double bill of WEIRD FILMS for a NEW TIME of NUCLEAR THREATS.

ALL of the MACHINERY of the COLD WAR, aged and CLATTERED, GATHERING DUST, and with APOCALYPTIC POTENTIAL have SUDDENLY returned to UTILITY with the RUSSIAN WAR ON UKRAINE. And EVERYONE in the WORLD is forced to WRESTLE with the implications. DESPITE this there is very little that has been remarked on the DANGER of a SPIRALLING TENSION getting OUT OF CONTROL. For that reason MONDO are SOUNDING THE ALARM.

LOOKING BACK at the time of MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION that was the epoch of the COLD WAR. When the EXISTENTIAL THREAT of NUCLEAR CONFLICT was SO MUCH that the VISUAL LANDSCAPE was WARPED and CHANGED into a DISCOMFITING visual world of FEAR, PARANOIA and ESTRANGEMENT from our own ability to live, anywhere in SAFETY.

FOR THIS REASON we are very happy, but also TERRIFIED, to be SCREENING:

THE WAR GAME (1966) from PETER WATKINS. A DOCU-DRAMA hybrid that looks at the EFFECTS of a NUCLEAR war on the BRITISH PUBLIC. An uncanny and STRANGE viewing of the TERRIBLE DANGERS of NUKES.

AND

THE BUNKER of the LAST GUNSHOTS (1981) from MARC CARO and JEAN-PIERRE JEUNET, a film that shows, with some absurdity, a time that might come to be our REALITY, in the event of a POST APOCALYPTIC FUTURITY. An era of PARANOIA, of a loss of space, and of TENSIONS BEYOND our wildest imagination.

THE LATTER OF THESE will be screened with a LIVE SCORE from HARPAL MUDHAR, who will synthesise the INCENDIARY SOUNDS of nuclear war into the score and SOUND DESIGN of the EXPERIMENTAL film.
