The Garden Cinema View:

Admittedly, several well-known films have explored Radical's themes before, including Dead Poets Society, Dangerous Minds, and the more recent Casablanca Beats. But there's something about this old tale of the unconventional pedagogue who cuts through their students' complacency after years of bureaucratic one-size-fits-all teaching, that has appealed to audiences through the years.

What sets Radical apart is its foundation in true events, extrapolated from an article in i (written by the film’s producer). The story empathetically portrays a period in Mexico when gang violence and the drug war were at their peak, depriving talented children of any hope of realising their potential. The depiction of dire poverty and the collapse of infrastructure in Matamoros is illuminating, and feels authentic.

Another strength of the film is the moving performances of its non-professional child actors. The charismatic Mexican star Eugenio Derbez thrives in a role reminiscent of his previous turn in the Oscar-winning CODA, bringing life and humour as the inspiring yet flawed teacher.

Radical is a bittersweet, and ultimately hopeful, crowd-pleaser that packs an emotional punch.
