Sonic the Hedgehog 3 PG

Jeff Fowler, USA, 2024, 109m.

Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.

Director Jeff Fowler returns along with our all-star cast including Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally, Lee Majdoub, newcomers Alyla Browne and Krysten Ritter, with Keanu Reeves joining the franchise as Shadow the Hedgehog.

The Garden Cinema View:

Although many doubted the series could be improved upon, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 represents a radical step forward for not only video game adaptations, but also the art of cinema itself. The blue of Sonic's fuzzy spikes is so profoundly deep that the viewer is reminded of the vast ocean depths of our planet, or perhaps the chess supercomputer, or even the Samuel L. Jackson shark film.

Sonic is fast. Very fast. Some have even doubted that his motion could be captured on a mere 24 frames per second. Fortunately for us, visionary director Jeff Fowler has made the bold decision to shoot his latest Sonic in an audacious 48 fps, allowing viewers to experience his super-speed in all its glory.

At last, a film that is fun for truly all of the family.
