Tár (HOH) 15

Todd Field, USA, 2022, 158m.

Open captioned screening for the hard of hearing

Set in the international world of classical music, the highly anticipated Tár is a masterful drama about celebrity conductor Lydia Tár, the first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra. In a film centred on its star performer Cate Blanchett (Best Actress at the Golden Globes 2023) and helped by the strength of the supporting actresses (Noémie Merlant, Nina Hoss), Tár is a study in power, passion, and entitlement that feels eminently real.

The Garden Cinema view: Todd Field explores the descent into hell of the eponymous conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, leading to an unpredictable crescendo of tension and self-destruction. In a tailor-made role, the magnificent Cate Blanchett leads this slow slide towards the darkest self that provokes questions about who we are, the masks we wear, and the demons we do not know how to tame.

Cast:
Cate Blanchett, Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Sophie Kauer
