GARDEN CINEMA EVENT

The Constant Gardener 15

Screened in partnership with In the Works with Gary Yershon
Fernando Meirelles, Chile, Germany, UK, USA, 2005, 129m.

Our screening on 28 March is the latest in our discussion series, In the Works, hosted by Oscar nominated composer Gary Yershon. Gary's guest is Make-up Designer Christine Blundell. Founder of her discipline’s leading UK training school, Oscar and BAFTA winner Christine Blundell has been styling actors' make-up and hair for the screen for over thirty years. Her work ranges from hard-edged realism to high-flying fantasies, from Mike Leigh’s Naked to Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman, via compelling romantic dramas such as The Constant Gardener.

Fernando Meirelles directs this political thriller based on the novel by John Le Carré. When political activist Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weisz) is found brutally murdered in Kenya, her widowed husband, unassuming minor diplomat Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes), becomes increasingly belligerent in his attempt to solve the mystery of her death, to the surprise of his British High Commission colleagues. Haunted by remorse and by insidious rumours of his wife's infidelities, Quayle uses his access to diplomatic secrets to unearth a vast and dangerous conspiracy about the methods of big pharmaceutical companies and the exploitation of the developing world by the West, at the same time as he discovers more about the beautiful young wife he never really knew.
