The Conversation (50th Anniversary) 12A

Francis Ford Coppola, USA, 1974, 112m.

New digital restoration.

Francis Ford Coppola’s first film after The Godfather is a masterpiece of sustained suspense and paranoia, with Gene Hackman as surveillance expert Harry Caul, a recluse living alone in an empty San Francisco apartment who is hired by a mysterious client to tail a young couple. Tracking the pair through San Francisco's Union Square, Caul and his associate Stan (the great character actor John Cazale) manage to record a cryptic conversation between them. Tormented by memories of a previous case that ended badly, Caul becomes obsessed with the resulting tape, trying to determine if the couple is in danger. The Conversation was nominated for three Academy Awards, including a Best Sound nod for legendary editor/sound designer Walter Murch.

Cast:
