The Nature of Love 15

Monia Chokri, Canada, France, 2023, 111m.

Sophia, a 40-year-old philosophy professor, is in a stable if somewhat socially-conforming relationship with Xavier. From gallery openings to endless dinner parties, ten years have

already flown by.

Sylvain is a craftsman, renovating Sophia and Xavier’s new country house. When Sophia and Sylvain meet, Sophia’s world is turned upside down. Opposites attract, but can they last?

The Garden Cinema View:

très chaud serving of Quebecois romantic comedy that is not going to help you cool down during the midsummer heat. The distinct French-North American culture emerges cinematically as Rohmer-esque characters (intellectual, pretentious, lovelorn) are caught up in Sirkian environments and melodrama. Cinematographer André Turpin (one of several regular collaborators of Xavier Dolan in the credits), shifts from restless zooms (a nod to New Hollywood or perhaps another pastiche of Éric Rohmer) to lovely 35mm frames that recall the likes of All that Heaven Allows and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. The humour, whilst fairly broad, is pointedly contemporary, in contrast to the buffet of classic visual homages. In comparison, the strong erotic charge is likely to be the enduring impression for viewers.
